S/V Northern Light

S/V Northern Light is a 38’ sloop-rigged pilothouse sailboat designed by Robert Perry and built in 1980 by Mantra Marine to be a fast, comfortable all weather cruising boat. She was built in Seattle by a small company of experienced marine professionals to a very high standard. Her hull is hand laid fiberglass with an Airex Foam core. This is not a motorsailor, she is truly a great sailing boat with a pilothouse.  The distinction was obvious the first time I took her sailing. With a Neil Pryde full batten main she doesn't need a gale to get going. When I come aboard Northern Light I immediately realized that this boat is made for cruising comfortably. With her full complement of controls at the inside helm, plus the ability to sail traditionally from the cockpit, this boat is really comfortable and is a great passagemaker. Winter warmer

 The little oil stove is taking care of all the heating now that I have most of the windows film-covered. The fan on the cabinet can swivel around and direct warm air into the v-berth area.

Mary Helen Stephens Celebration of Life

Mike attended Mary Helen's celebration of life on Sunday, September 22, 2024, at the Valdez Convention and Civic Center. Family and friends paid tribute to Mary Helen by sharing stories about her. After the remembrance, attendees visited with one another and ate and drank some of her favorite treats, snacks, and beverages. The next day, family and friends gathered on the Glacier Spirit for Mary Helen's final cruise. The boat visited Columbia Glacier and Mary Helen's ashes were laid to rest in the icy waters of Columbia Fjord. '

 Got the boat registered with DMV, and the Marina, and went to State Farm and got covered.

A new adventure begins

 Having dinner with Sean and the sellers. Fun We did the test sailing/motoring this morning before it started raining. Everything works. The main is almost new. The large roller furling jib needs a little work but the fabric is basically fine. There’s Strong Track on the main hoist because it’s full battened. Winches are all good. It’s very different than High Noon. And VERY different from Harmony Isle.  But it’s a good compromise between the two. It feels stable and like it could take a hell of a beating and not break anything.
